Superintendent Dr. John Wyrick Joins Staff

July 23, 2013

Superintendent Dr. John Wyrick

Dr. John Wyrick is the 5th superintendent of Labette County USD 506 in Altamont, Kansas and assumed duties on July 1, 2013.

A school superintendent for the past six years, Dr. Wyrick has led both larger and smaller school districts. He served as the superintendent of Haviland Public Schools in Haviland, Kansas, from 2008 to 2009 and Erie Public Schools from 2009-2013. During his thirteen years in education, Dr. Wyrick has been a classroom teacher, Pk-5 principal, 6-12 principal, athletic director, coach, and superintendent of schools.

He began his education career as a social studies teacher in 2000. He holds a Doctorate of Education from Wichita State University and a Master of Education from Pittsburg State University, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University.

As superintendent of USD 506, Dr. Wyrick is directly responsible for overseeing academic achievement for all students, one that provides a healthy, safe, engaged and supportive learning environment. He is also responsible for making sure every child is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study, and for employment and participation in a global environment. His vision for the district includes building upon the parent-school partnerships already in place, a continued focus on ensuring our students have great teachers in every classroom, and a high quality school in every community so that all USD 506 students receive the education and support they need to succeed in school and in life. Key to that effort is developing a healthy, productive work culture and ensuring that administrative services provide optimal support to schools. He also believes it is very important to understand the history, culture, organization and community of the entire district. Known for being an active listener, Wyrick plans on investing tremendous time during his first year as superintendent talking with staff, students, parents, community members and lawmakers.

Dr. Wyrick believes that all students should have high quality leaders and teachers, along with a rigorous curriculum that promotes critical thinking, engages learning, and prepares them for success in the 21st century. He values family and community involvement in and beyond the school day to promote continuous learning for all students. Dr. Wyrick teaches by example by continuing to be active in the community and serves on the boards of numerous educational and community organizations. He has been married for fifteen years to his wife Alisha, and they have three children: a daughter and two boys who will be attending school within the district.

Dr. Wyrick will be taking office at the Curran Administration Center as of July 1st, and is "never too busy to speak with a patron, staff member, or student".  He can be reached during regular business hours at 620-784-5326 ext. 185, or by email at jwyrick@usd506.org.
